Women’s Division

Welcome to the CGC Women’s Division

Message from the Women’s Division President – April 8th, 2025

Hey all you Golf Goddesses!  Your Women’s Division Executive Team has a very special and sparkly season opening event planned for you.

Please join us and your fellow women members for our Glitz and Glam Opening Gala on the evening of Thursday, May 8 from 6-8pm.  You will want to dress to impress for your red carpet moment at this semi-formal cocktail party-style gathering. This is also our fundraising event for the 2025 season, with proceeds going to fund a Women’s Division project at Bonny Lea Farm.

Registration for this event will be done through Golf Genius, and you will receive an invitation from the CGC on Wednesday, April 9. You will click on the embedded link to sign up, and the $20.00 registration fee will be processed when you register.

Here is an overview of what to expect.

Doors open at 6pm. You will enter the Gala through the bar area where you’ll be greeted and can check your coat. At the registration table you will be checked in and receive a numbered bidding paddle for the live auction and a list of the items in both the live and silent auction. From there you will enter the glitzy Clubhouse Restaurant. Once you make it past the paparazzi, you’ll be offered a complimentary Prosecco or non-alcoholic spritzer to enjoy as you mingle with your fellow women members and sample some of the delicious hors d’oeuvres.

For the fundraising part of the event, we will be doing a live and silent purse auction. If you are not familiar with purse auctions, here’s how it works. Each purse has been donated by a local celebrity, a WD member or a friend of the CGC. Each purse will have a theme and will contain a number of items consistent with that theme. For example, a golf getaway themed purse might contain golf accessories, attire and a gift certificate for green fees.

You’ll want to visit the silent auction tables set up in the enclosed porch area where you can view the purses and place your bids on the ones you want. Another table will have the purses that will be part of the live auction so you can check those out too. The live auction promises to be a lot of fun, especially with Auctioneer Dan Fraser at the helm. That’s where you will need your numbered bidding paddle and a feisty competitive spirit.

For a little extra excitement, we will be selling chances to win with the Golden Ticket. The Golden Ticket winner will be drawn prior to the start of the live auction and will give the winner her choice of one of the live auction purses as her Golden Ticket prize. Buy one ticket for $10.00 or three tickets for $20.00 – cash only – for the chance to win.

As bidding closes on individual purses and the high bid winner is announced, the purse will be set aside for the winner until the end of the evening. Winners will then visit the payment table to pay by cash, cheque or e-transfer to wdtreasurer@chestergolfclub.ca and pick up their new purse.

We have some other surprises in mind and you’ll have the chance to win a few door prizes. The bar will be open for beverage purchases during the event.

The Gala will be a wonderful way to kick off the Women’s Division season, catch up with your golfing buddies, meet new friends and support a beloved organization here in our community. We are excited to partner with Bonny Lea Farm on a project to purchase high quality Adirondack chairs for some of their outdoor areas to enable residents to enjoy time outside for years to come.

So mark your calendars for May 8, dig out those little black dresses and watch for the invitation to register in your inbox on Wednesday.

And remember, “A little bit of lipstick and a lot of attitude goes a long way!!”

See you at the Gala!

Trudy

Message from the Women’s Division President – April 7th, 2025

Season’s Greetings everyone!  It’s golf season – well, almost.  As we eagerly await the opening of our beautiful course, I want to welcome you back and give you a brief overview of what we have in store for you in 2025.

The first Women’s Division event of the season will be our Glitz and Glam Gala on the evening of Thursday, May 8. We invite all women members of the CGC to dig out that little black dress and your sparkliest jewels and join us for a glamorous season opener.  The Gala will also be our WD fundraiser for 2025, with a live and silent auction for some fabulous items that may lead to some friendly bidding wars!  Elbows up!  It promises to be a lot of fun. Proceeds from the event will be going to Bonny Lea Farm to fund a CGC Women’s Division project there.  I’ll be sending out a message very soon with all the details on the Gala, so stay tuned.

A message went out to you on Monday of this week from Dan Fraser with information about the Chester Women’s Field Day on July 15. Event Chair Sheila Boss will again be offering early registration to CGC Members – April 14 at 9am, so you have time to find a teammate and be ready to register right away on the 14th. Once registration opens to non-members on April 16, it will fill to capacity (50 teams) within hours, so don’t delay.

Also this week, the CGC sent out a message about the “Get Golf Ready” Women’s Clinics on select Mondays and Tuesdays in May and June. Dan and Nathan are great instructors and these clinics fill very quickly, so sign up now to ensure you get a spot.

League play for women begins in May with the first day for Women on Wednesday (WOW) on May 7 and the first day for Tuesday Morning League (TML) on May 13. Diane Crowther and Sherry Brine and their Host Teams are all set to go. Check the Member Portal for more details on both leagues. The password for the Member Portal has been updated and is now chestergc2025.

Our leagues will be celebrating International Women’s Golf Day on June 3 (TML) and June 4 (WOW) and planning for these celebrations has begun.

Details about other events and activities later in the season will be shared in future messages, but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the amazing work of my Women’s Division Executive Team who make it all possible. I know you are very appreciative of everything they do for you, as many of you have expressed to me. So when you see them at an event or out on the course, please offer a word of thanks to these dedicated volunteers. It means a lot to them.

And on the subject of volunteers, I again invite you to consider volunteering yourself. The Women’s Division, WOW and TML are always looking for help with events and planning. The CGC Board is also looking for members interested in serving on its committees. I know a few women have volunteered for those committees, but having stronger representation from among our women members would be a real asset to the Club. If you want to volunteer or are looking for more information, I would be happy to assist or to guide you to the appropriate person.

That’s it for now. See you out there soon!

Message from the Women’s Division President – October 15, 2024

Happy belated Thanksgiving everyone! Although many of us hope to enjoy another few weeks out on the course, the end of the 2024 season is fast approaching.  As I’ve mentioned previously, the WOW League wrapped up their season on August 28th with a celebration of their 10th anniversary. The TML closing tournament and awards presentation was on September 24th and featured the President versus the Vice President Challenge. The competition was fierce but friendly, and Trudy’s Talented Troops triumphed over Sheila’s Sharp Shooters. Check out photos from the event in the latest edition of The TML Links. Congratulations to TML Coordinator Sherry Brine and WOW Coordinator Diane Crowther for a great season of league play.

We tried something different this year for the Women’s Division season closing event and Annual General Meeting – the first ever ‘Breakfast Ball’ – on Saturday, October 5. Attendees enjoyed a delicious breakfast buffet compliments of the Women’s Division, followed by the business of the AGM, award presentations for Match Play and the Nunn Trophy and general discussion. A huge thank you to Barbara Spencer as she steps down from the role of Treasurer, and a warm welcome to Karen Nickerson who was elected as our new Treasurer. I’ve included a few photos from the morning. I think my attire was quite suitable for the Ball!

The 2024 season was a very busy and successful one for the Women’s Division, with many events on our schedule. This was accomplished through the efforts of a dedicated and talented Executive Team, a cadre of event volunteers and the amazing CGC Management and Staff. I offer a massive THANK YOU to each and every one of them!

With the acceptance of new members to the CGC this year, we were thrilled to welcome fifteen women to the ranks of the Women’s Division, bringing us to 290 members. Women comprise more than a third of the overall CGC membership. In addition to providing programming for you, your WD Executive Team advocates for your interests, and as a member of the CGC Board of Directors, I, as your President, represent you at the Board level. I encourage each of you to attend the upcoming CGC Annual General Meeting on October 22 to make your voice heard.

Have a great Fall everyone!

Final Women’s Division Event of the 2024 Season

Fall greetings everyone! While the days are shorter and conditions can be a bit cooler, these are wonderful golfing days and I hope everyone is making the most of our beautiful course. Many of you are playing in the Tuesday Morning League closing tournament today and the CGC Member Closing Scramble coming up on Sunday.

With the season winding down, it is time for the Women’s Division to hold its Annual General Meeting. We thought we’d try something new this year – a new format, a new day of the week, and a new twist on this last function of the season. We are calling it our Breakfast Ball and AGM.

ALL women members of the CGC are invited to join us for our Breakfast Ball and AGM on Saturday, October 5 at 9am in the Clubhouse Restaurant. There will be a delicious breakfast buffet with a variety of hot and cold breakfast favourites – bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, croissant, toast, fruit salad, yogurt, juice, coffee and tea – all compliments of your Women’s Division. After 10am, the Clubhouse will offer a Breakfast Ball beverage special (Caesar or Mimosa) for $7.00.

The business of the AGM will be brief.  All of the AGM materials will be posted on the Women’s Division section of the CGC website on or before October 1st to enable you to review them in advance. The verbal reports will just touch on the highlights, and you’ll be invited to make comments prior to a motion to accept the reports. We will also be calling for a motion to elect an individual to fill a vacancy on the WD Executive Team.

Following the AGM segment, we will ask for your feedback on our events and welcome your suggestions for next season.

We will celebrate the successes of the season, welcoming our newest women members and acknowledging some individual achievements. The Nunn Trophy and prizes for Singles and Doubles Match Play will be awarded.

Everyone in attendance will be eligible to win a $100.00 credit to their CGC House Account or one of the other door prizes.

Although there is no golfing involved in this event, we will need you to register please fill this form out below if you will be attending.

Space is limited and the deadline to register is September 30.

See you there!

Message from the Women’s Division President – August 29, 2024

Hey everyone!  It’s hard to believe, but the calendar says it’s almost September.  The summer suddenly feels short, but we did pack a lot in!  The Women’s Division was certainly very busy through July and August. On July 2, we held the qualifier for the NSGA Women’s Provincial Bronze Tournament and the competition for the Nunn Trophy. Congratulations to Gail Carleton, winner of the Nunn Trophy and to runner-up Barbara Spencer.  The power team of Audrey Nicoll, Janice Moreside, Willa Norman and Sheila Boss represented the Chester Golf Club this week at the Bronze at the Fort View Golf Course in Annapolis Royal on August 27. The course was tough but the team enjoyed some great camaraderie. Great job!

The Women’s Division’s annual Field Day was held on July 16 and we hosted a field of 56 teams from Chester and around the Maritimes for a day of golf, prizes and a great meal. Event Chair Sheila Boss and her team of hard-working volunteers and our amazing CGC Staff did the CGC proud as they showcased our beautiful course and received rave reviews on a very successful event.

The Women’s Singles and Doubles Match Play competition has also wrapped up for 2024 with Mary Raine and Theresa Groulx winning in Doubles Title and Trudy Somers-Lamb (somehow) taking the Singles Title. Well done! Thanks to Linda Oliver and Assistant Pro Nathan Harvey for coordinating everything.

Further thanks to Nathan for conducting a series of Women’s Clinics in July and early August. The sessions were very affordable and well attended. Those who took part learned a lot and speak very highly of his teaching style and positive approach.

The Women’s Division ‘FUNdraising’ event in support of the Lighthouse Foodbank in Chester was held on August 13 with more than 80 women members and guests enthusiastically taking part in a fun day of golf and dinner thanks to our many volunteers and CGC Staff.  Here’s a recap from our fabulous Event Chair, Sheila Boss.

On August 13th, the Women’s Division and Chester Golf Course hosted a FUNdraiser in support of the Lighthouse Foodbank.

The event and the day were a huge success through the combined efforts of the CGC leadership team and staff and the hands of many volunteers.  Together we raised $6250.  In addition to this, the Lighthouse Foodbank received $1100 directly from attendees and others who were playing in the morning shotgun. And with donations that came in post-event and electronically, the total amount raised was $7,744.75.  Golfers also donated several bins of women’s health and wellness products to the Foodbank.

A lot of planning and teamwork made the day FUN with on course games and challenges and at the same time a valuable fundRAISER for the Lighthouse Foodbank.  The weather was grand, and a field of eighty-two women came out to play and donate to this very worthy cause. So “much fun” was a common refrain heard from the participants and based on all of the feedback received; the golfers truly had a wonderful day on the golf course and enjoyed a fabulous meal and dining experience in the Clubhouse restaurant.”

Sheila Boss, Event Chair

We are very grateful for the generous support of the many CGC Members and Staff who contributed to the FUNdraiser, including those who purchased a raffle ticket. The lucky winner of the first prize – the Annapolis Valley golf and dinner package (two rounds at Ken-Wo plus a $250.00 gift certificate from Luckett’s Vineyard) was Pat Bloodworth. And the winner of the local getaway package (one night stay at Gray Gables B&B and a $50.00 gift certificate at the CGC Clubhouse Restaurant) was Nancy Timbrell-Muckle. Congratulations!

The WOW League, under the leadership of Diane Crowther, had yet another record-breaking season and held their closing tournament on Wednesday. Despite the showers, even Mother Nature couldn’t dampen the spirits of those gathered. It was truly a joyous celebration of WOW’s 10th anniversary.

The Tuesday Morning League (TML) closing will be on September 24 and League Coordinator Sherry Brine and her team are planning a great day featuring the President versus the Vice President Challenge. Those who know, know! Game on Sheila!!!

Planning is also underway for the Women’s Division season closing event and AGM on Saturday, October 5. Save the date and stay tuned for more details on that soon.

I will close by reminding you of the call letter from the CGC Board Nominating Committee seeking interested candidates for the executive officer roles on the Board of Directors. More than one third of the CGC members are women, and I know there are many in our ranks with the skills, experience and enthusiasm to serve our Club well. I hope that you will consider answering that call by responding to the Nominating Committee.

If you would prefer to get involved in another capacity, please consider volunteering with your Women’s Division Executive Team or with one of our leagues. Feel free to contact me about that or if you have any questions.

Have a great long weekend!

Message from Women’s Division President – June 6, 2024

Hi everyone.  We are off to a great start this season with a number of very successful events. We are also welcoming many new women to our ranks for the first time in several years as the CGC has been able to accept new members from the membership waiting list. Glad to have you with us!

The Women’s Division Nine and Wine in May was lots of fun and a great way to kick off our season. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, many women bundled up and came out for the Club Opening Scramble and the Women’s Two-Ball Tournament. Congratulations to those who took home prizes. And this week the fun continued as we celebrated International Women’s Golf Week with special events hosted by our Tuesday Morning League (TML) and Women on Wednesday (WOW) League. It was wonderful to see everyone sporting their red and white, laughing and enjoying the games and camaraderie with fellow members and guests. On behalf of all the participants, I offer a huge thank you to Sherry, Diane and Sheila, all their volunteers and the CGC staff.

League play is underway for both WOW and TML. Participation in both leagues is growing and our league coordinators and hosts are doing a commendable job organizing everything.

The Women’s Match Play competition will be starting in July and you’ll be able to sign up for Singles Match Play, Doubles Match Play or both beginning tomorrow (Friday).  Watch for a message from Linda Oliver, our Match Play Coordinator.  There you’ll find the links to the Golf Genius registration page where you can sign up and access a full description of Match Play.

I hear from some of our members that they are reluctant to sign up for competitions like Match Play or Club competitions because they think these events are only for the best players. That is not the case.  You certainly don’t have to be a great player to take part or to do well. Most of these events use player handicaps to even the competition or to award both gross and net prizes.  I encourage you to consider signing up for Match Play, the upcoming Member Mixed Two-Ball and the Club Championship. And don’t forget those Nine and Dine evenings.

Although it’s a month away, I’d like to draw your attention to another event happening on July 2 that encompasses two competitions – the Nunn Trophy and the Bronze Qualifier.  These competitions have previously been held by the Tuesday Morning League, but we are opening them up to ALL women members this year.

The NSGA Women’s Bronze Tournament is a provincial competition for women aged 19 or older with a handicap index (HI) greater than 19.0. The Women’s Division funds the registration fees for a team of four CGC women to compete. This year’s Bronze Tournament will be held at Fort View Golf Course in Annapolis Royal on August 27. The four CGC players are determined based on the results of the qualifier competition which will be held here on July 2. All women members of the CGC with a current HI greater than 19.0 as of July 2 are eligible to qualify. To qualify, you must play 18 holes any time on July 2 and pass in your attested scorecard with your gross score to the Pro Shop that same day. The top four competitors based on net scores will be invited to represent the CGC at the Bronze.

The Nunn Trophy is a CGC trophy awarded annually.  All women members of the CGC with a current HI between 32.6 and 42.4 as of July 2 are eligible to win the trophy. To qualify, you must play 18 holes any time on July 2 and pass in your attested scorecard with your gross score to the Pro Shop that same day. The trophy winner will be determined based on net scores. We realize the eligible HI range is limited, but the parameters were set decades ago. If you’re uncertain whether you’d qualify, pass in your scorecard anyway and Staff will take care of it.

Our annual Chester Women’s Field Day will be held on July 16. This extremely popular event is full with a long waiting list, so hopefully you have already registered your team.

The Women’s Division is planning to host a ‘FUNdraising’ event on August 13. Preliminary planning has begun but VP Sheila Boss is looking for volunteers to help plan the event and to pitch in on that day. If you have ideas or are interested in volunteering, please let us know by sending an email to womensdivision@chestergolfclub.ca.

This has been a lengthy message with a lot of information, but I want to take a moment to address one misconception that keeps coming up. I can’t stress enough that if you are a woman member of the CGC, you are a member of the CGC Women’s Division and you are eligible for Women’s Division events. You don’t have to join a league to be a member of Women’s Division.

And just a reminder – there’s a CGC Member Town Hall meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 12 at 6:30 pm at the Chester Basin Legion to get member input regarding the priorities and direction of our golf club. I encourage everyone to attend this important meeting.

I’ve taken up enough of your time today. Now get out there and enjoy our beautiful course!

Trudy Somers-Lamb

President, Women’s Division

Events in Celebration of International Women’s Golf Week

Dear CGC Women Members,

On behalf of the Women’s Division Executive Team and our TML and WOW Leagues, all women members of the CGC are invited to participate in events celebrating International Women’ Golf Week.

During the first week of June, golf clubs around the world organize events that celebrate women playing the game and learning skills that last a lifetime.

The International Women’s Golf (IWG) organization aims “to help lead growth in the golf industry by giving women around the world the opportunity to try golf no matter their race, religion, language, geography, or economic status. The mission is to make the game of golf fun and accessible to women and girls around the world.”

I have referenced these events in previous messages and TML members received a previous email about this in league communications, but most of you will be receiving this invitation for the first time. Here’s what we have planned.

The Women’s Division is pleased to be celebrating with two events this year, one in collaboration with the Tuesday Morning League (TML) on June 4th and one with the Women on Wednesday (WOW) League on June 5th. On these dates, we welcome members to invite a friend (member or green fee player) who is new to golf or is not yet comfortable with joining a league. This is an opportunity to promote the game to interested women, having them join old friends or make new ones as they play in a fun round.

If you register for the Tuesday morning event, you can choose to play 9 or 18-holes. It will be a best ball scramble with progressive tee times beginning at 8:30am with four-person teams.

If you register for the Wednesday afternoon event, it will be a 9-hole shotgun start best ball scramble beginning at 4:30pm.

In both events, each player will use her/their personal choice of 3 Clubs and a putter for the round. Everyone is encouraged to embrace the day and celebrate by wearing red and white golf attire, the colors of IWG. Members and non-members, new or experienced, will be paired together. If you would like to play with a particular group for this event, then please let us know, and we will make it so. The CGC has kindly offered reduced green fee rates for the June 4th and 5th events – $35.00 plus tax for 9 holes $35 and $52 plus tax for 18 holes.

A first tee gift will be given to each participant. There will be prizes for serious, not-so-serious, and downright silly, golf challenges. The idea is to have fun and enjoy our beautiful golf course, hopefully, on an equally beautiful day. After the game, we hope you will stop in to the Clubhouse Restaurant to enjoy the lunch or dinner special selected for this celebration.

Registering for the Tuesday June 4th TML game

Registration is being done using Golf Genius. When you register yourself, you will have the option to invite a friend. To do so, simply add the name of your guest in the field provided. A confirmation email will be sent from Golf Genius immediately. You will receive another email with your tee time from Chronogolf prior to the event. If you have any trouble registering, please send an email to Sherry Brine at sbrine@eastlink.ca.

Click here to register for the June 4 event:   https://www.golfgenius.com/ggid/hyyp4t

Registering for the Wednesday, June 5th WOW event

Registration for the WOW shotgun scramble will open on Wednesday, May 29th. At that time, you will be able to sign up by sending an email to wow@chestergolfclub.ca, and including your playing partner or guest’s name.

Posters for both events are attached. Check those for additional details.

Thanks everyone.  See you at the course!

Message from Women’s Division President – April 22, 2024

Happy spring everyone! I’m sure many of you are eager to get out this week for your first tee time of
the season. The course and the facilities look great, and it will feel wonderful to be out golfing again. If you didn’t receive a WD 65 th Anniversary commemorative towel or a copy of the Rules Bag Tag last season, you’ll be able to get those when you pick up your 2024 CGC Member Bag Tag.

Your Women’s Division Executive Team has been hard at work preparing a great season of league playand special events for you. Keep checking the CGC Member Portal as we will be continuing to postinformation there. The new password is chestergc2024. Here’s a snapshot of most of the Team at a recent meeting.

Trudy Somers-Lamb, Linda Weckman, Linda Oliver, Sheila Boss, Sherry Brine, Catherine Campbell and Barbara Spencer. Missing: Diane Crowther (who was in Portugal!!)

The opening event of the Women’s Division season will be a Nine and Wine on the afternoon of
Tuesday, May 21, and all women members are invited to attend. If you are a member who does not
often attend such events or you are new to the Club, I urge you to please come, meet your WD
Executive Team and other women members, and learn more about our programming. Details on how to sign up for this event and further information will be sent out in early May. In the interim, mark the date on your calendar!

The Nine and Wine will be a very casual nine-hole scramble featuring some fun games and random
prizes, both on and off the course. You will even be treated to a wine sampling out on the course.
Following the golf, there will be a reception, prize giveaways and presentations back at the
Clubhouse. You’ll be able to purchase a glass of wine or other beverage and enjoy some hor d’oeuvres compliments of the Women’s Division. Your Women’s Division Executive Team will be on hand to provide a brief overview of the TML and WOW Leagues, the Ringer Board, Match Play, and other activities we have planned, as well as answer any questions you may have about WD or Club events. We are still finalizing plans for the presentation segment of the event, so if you have topics that you would like us to cover, please let me know at womensdivision@chestergolfclub.ca.

Happy golfing everyone. See you soon!

Message from the President

Message from Women’s Division President – March 8, 2024

Happy International Women’s Day to all the women members of the Chester Golf Club! What a great day to welcome you to the 2024 golf season on behalf of the entire Women’s Division Executive Team. The IWD theme this year is #InspireInclusion – celebrating diversity and empowerment and encouraging everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women. That’s certainly something we strive to do every day.

I know you are anxiously awaiting the opening of the course. It’s coming soon. We have a busy season planned, including an opening Nine and Wine event in May, celebrations of International Women’s Golf Week in June, the CGC Women’s Field Day in July, a FUNdraiser event in August, as well as Singles and Doubles Match Play. My future monthly messages will provide more information on specific events and activities. In the meantime, you can check out information about the Tuesday Morning League (TML) and the Women on Wednesday (WOW) League on the CGC website Member Portal and in the 2024 Member Handbook when it becomes available. The password for the Member Portal is currently chestergc2023, however this will be changing in the near future and the CGC will be providing members with a new password.

In this month’s message, I’d like to acknowledge the feedback from our WD survey last Fall and share the main themes that emerged. Not surprisingly, respondents had different and sometimes opposing viewpoints about what the WD has been doing and could be doing. We have a large, diverse membership and each woman has unique needs and opinions. We know we cannot please everyone, but I assure you, we carefully reviewed all the information we received. The two main themes were a desire for a continued or increased focus on the social aspects of golf and the need to foster an inclusive, supportive and respectful environment.

We listened. We have already made some adjustments to our programming and will continue to keep these themes top of mind as we move forward. We’ve posted an overview of the outcome of the survey in the WD section of the Member Portal, and I encourage you to read it. One key outcome is that we have made some changes to the Tuesday Morning League so that women who prefer a non-competitive experience will have that option. We are also implementing some initiatives to make less experienced golfers more comfortable with the etiquette and rules of golf so they can be more confident in participating in WD, league and club competitions.

The WD survey also revealed that there are some misconceptions out there – about our processes, about the leagues, about WD and club events, etc. We will be improving our communication around these elements to increase understanding and address any false information.

That’s it from me for now. Watch for a message soon from VP Sheila Boss, Event Coordinator for our Women’s Field Day on July 16, with important information about registering for this year’s event.

November 3rd Update – Women’s Division

November 3rd, 2023

As we wrap up the 2023 golf season at the CGC, I want to say ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye for now’ to all the women members of the Chester Golf Club.

My name is Trudy Somers-Lamb and I was elected as your Women’s Division President at the WD AGM held on October 3. For those who don’t know me, I’ve been a club member since 2016 and have served as the WOW (Women on Wednesday) Coordinator, WD Treasurer, WD Vice President, Lead for the TML (Tuesday Morning League) Host Team and Event Chair of the Chester Women’s Field Day. I am honoured to assume the role of WD President, joining a distinguished group of predecessors who we honoured in our 65th anniversary celebrations in 2023.

I would like to introduce the other members of the Women’s Division Executive team:

  • Vice President – Sheila Boss
  • Treasurer – Barbara Spencer
  • Secretary – Linda Weckman
  • Past President – Linda Oliver
  • WOW Coordinator – Diane Crowther
  • TML Coordinator – Sherry Brine
  • Golf Genius Coordinator – Catherine Campbell

I am so pleased to be working with this amazing group of women. We have already begun planning for next season, and the feedback we received from our recent survey of women members will be invaluable in guiding our work. We sincerely thank everyone who took the time to respond to the survey. Some of the recurring themes included offering skills/rules clinics, facilitating the mentoring of less experienced players, de-mystifying club tournaments, communicating more, bringing back monthly luncheons, and better accommodating non-competitive players.

The survey responses also revealed that there are some misconceptions out there, and addressing those will also be a priority. For now, I would just like to reaffirm that the Women’s Division represents ALL women golfers at the Chester Golf Club, not just those who participate in league play. This is a fundamental principle for me and for my team, and for everything we do.

I will close with a huge thank you to the outgoing members of the Executive – Gail Mitchell, Jane Filbee and Cathy Rafuse for their years of volunteering, as well as to the many hosts of the WOW and TML Leagues who make league play happen. And thanks in particular to Linda Oliver for her tireless work as President over the last two years, and for putting up with me! It was unfortunate that our Volunteer Appreciation event was snowed out on Wednesday, but these dedicated volunteers and others who stepped forward to help at special events are very much appreciated. Thank you all!

Until next season,

Trudy

August 2023 Update – Womens Division

September 4th, 2023

Hello women members of Chester Golf Club, August has been a great golf month even though weather has not always cooperated. Both the Tuesday Morning League and Women on Wednesday (WOW) have been very active. The demand from members for tee times continues to maintain good participation rates.

The WOW league, headed by Diane Crowther, held its closing night, August 30, with dinner and prizes creating great memories of 2023 golf season.

The Tuesday Morning League, under direction of Trudy Somers-Lamb and her team of hosts, holds its closing golf day September 26, and there will be lots of fun and prizes and surprises.

For the first time the WD will hold our AGM and end of golf season activities after the league closings, October 3. We plan a 9-hole shot gun fun golf game starting at 10 am, with light lunch, the wrap of our celebrations of the 65th anniversary of CGC Women’s Division. Watch for details on sign up for this event under the member portal on our CGC website and send me a note to reserve your spot. linda@prfarms.ca. The first 40 people to sign up will have a free hamburger (or vegie substitute). The election of our new executive and the AGM will follow the lunch. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the AGM to those in attendance.

As part of the conclusion of the WD 65th anniversary celebrations, the WD will send a short survey to members. The purpose is to seek feedback on current activities and to get ideas for future programming including how to continue to grow the participation of women at our club.

All women members of CGC will be encouraged to participate in person or through responses to our AGM material on the member portal under Women’s Division. It is not possible to accomplish a successful golf season without the tremendous work done by volunteers. The league hosts, the WD executive and of course the support of staff. The WD continues to work closely with staff and appreciates the positive attitude displayed by the CGC team.

Best regards,

Linda Oliver

WD President

July 2023 Update to the Chester Women’s Division Members

Hello everyone. Here’s what’s been happening with Women’s Division activities over the past month.

We called upon Ruth Christian, our resident golf rules expert who holds both Canadian and US rules certification, to present and explain recent rule changes. Ruth gave her rules seminar to both the WOW League and the Tuesday Morning League. With her guidance, we have printed a Golf Rules Bag Tag highlighting important changes to the rules of golf which came into effect in January 2023. This is a handy item to keep in your golf bag so you can quickly check on rules.

All women members of the CGC can pick up their complimentary Rules Bag Tag in the Pro Shop over the next few weeks. And while there, those who have not yet received their complimentary 65th Anniversary commemorative golf towel can pick it up as well. Both these initiatives are part of our Women’s Division 65-year Anniversary celebrations.

Both the Tuesday Morning and WOW leagues have been operating successfully, and spirits have been high, despite our challenges with the rain.

This year’s Match Play competition is well underway, and organizer Gail Mitchell will report on the outcome of these games once complete.

Trudy Somers-Lamb organized a great Women’s Field Day at the CGC last week. She has provided this update for you.

Women’s Field Day, hosted by the CGC Women’s Division on July 18th, was a resounding success. A field of 108 women from clubs around the province and our own club competed for gross and net prizes in three flights, and then enjoyed a great meal at the closing dinner and awards presentation back in the Clubhouse. Women’s Division President Linda Oliver spoke to the group about the growth of women’s golf under the past and future leadership of women like those we celebrated in this 65th year of the Women’s Division in Chester.

We received tremendously positive feedback from the participants about our beautiful course and their Field Day experience, and we were told repeatedly that the Chester Women’s Field Day is a must-do event. Interest in our Field Day is always overwhelming, and we could have filled the event twice over this year. As our GM Alex Egan stated, the Field Day went exceptionally well and allowed us to really showcase the Chester Golf Club.

The year-after-year success of our Field Day is only possible because of the hard work and dedication of the many women members who volunteer and the amazing Staff at the club. And we receive great support from many CGC Members, local area companies and other individuals who donate door prizes which allowed us to award a little something to about half of the competitors this year. I really cannot thank everyone involved enough.

Trudy Somers-Lamb
Event Chair
CGC Women’s Field Day

The Club Championship will be held on August 5 and 6, so please consider taking part in this event. It’s lots of fun and we need a good representation of women members. Spaces will fill up, so act now and join in this great club event. Check with Pro Shop for more information and to register. Results of the event will be shared once the results are tabulated.
